Spirit of BC Community Committees act as a valuable contact and advocate for local businesses looking for ways to take advantage of the opportunities available to them due to the 2010 Winter Games being hosted in British Columbia.

Spirit of BC Community Committees work with the business community and organizations such as local Chambers of Commerce and Business Improvement Associations to stimulate interest and excitement about the 2010 Winter Games, which in turn translates into economic benefits for local businesses.

Key concepts within this effort encourage Spirit of BC Community Committees to:

Inform

Inform business owners of proper processes and protocols and address how the community and local businesses can access Games-related opportunities and maximize their potential for success.

Educate

Educate suppliers and businesses on the economic impact of the Games and help inspire them to seek new opportunities.

Connect

Connect local businesses to 2010 Winter Games-related opportunities – to be a supplier, a subcontractor, or introduce local businesses that could potentially work jointly to provide useful products and services to the 2010 Winter Games.

Using their recognition and official status, Spirit of BC Community Committees are in a unique position to take advantage of the existing local infrastructure and contacts throughout this process – providing the linkage between 2010 Winter Games organizations and local government, media and business interests.

Culture is the second pillar of the Olympic Movement. To touch the soul of the nation – that’s the mission of Vancouver 2010. To do this the Cultural Olympiad is key to expressing that soul, nationally and around the world.

The Cultural Olympiad will deliver an outstanding program of pre-Games celebrations and Games-time arts festivals celebrating the best contemporary, classical and aboriginal artists of BC, Canada and the world.

The Cultural Olympiad will showcase the contemporary Canadian imagination through a series of three festivals of popular and fine arts with performances and exhibitions by a bold spectrum of creators from across the country – with something for everyone in these culturally-diverse, multi-faceted celebrations. Working in partnership with the artistic community, the Cultural Olympiad will highlight some of the most dynamic talent from British Columbia, Canada and the world – including contemporary, classical and Aboriginal music, theatre, dance, media, and literary, visual, ecommerce web design, interdisciplinary, culinary and street art.

Established and emerging artists will be showcased, new works will be premiered, artistic collaborations and intercultural exchange will be fostered. Activity will be concentrated primarily in Vancouver and Whistler, with the potential for provincial, national and international extensions through performing arts tours, visual arts exhibitions and new media activity.

VANOC will produce the majority of Cultural Olympiad programming in partnership with regional not-for-profit arts presenters, producers and festivals. Through co-productions and co-presentations VANOC will leverage our community’s knowledge base, creativity, audience base and resources to maximize the scope, scale, relevance and overall community impact of the Cultural Olympiad.

The Cultural Olympiad will build over three years, launching in 2008 with an expected program of some 40 to 50 events comprising more than 100 performances and exhibitions. In 2009, participation and anticipation will increase with an expanded one-year countdown celebration. And, in 2010, the Cultural Olympiad will showcase the Olympic and Paralympic Arts Festival – a transformative arts and culture program that will create memories and legacies to last a lifetime and inspire a generation.

Welcome to the North Shore Spirit of BC Community Committee website.

The North Shore is uniquely poised to benefit from the upcoming 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in a number of ways. We have an Olympic venue with events to be watched from around the world; we are at the centre of activity between Vancouver and Whistler; and with our spectacular setting, the world will remember Vancouver for its stunning mountains, sea, and our welcoming hospitality.

What is Spirit of B.C.?

Spirit of B.C. Committees have been formed in communities around British Columbia to help develop benefits for local areas as we lead up to 2010. These committees provide residents with an influential and local point-of-contact with the Province and 2010 Legacies Now. There are currently over 95 communities across B.C. which have Spirit of B.C. Committees.
